Bobby the Barbarian

I was recently asked to DM a game for a language exchange on El Dirigible

Basically the game was played in English trying to gather native and non-native English speakers. The first meet up was last Friday. I didn’t have much time to prepare something too complex, so I decided to turn to D&D 4th because is a system I know very well, and because it’s really quick and easy to prepare a game for a one-shot session.

I picked a 4 level dungeon from the Dungeon Delve manual. I really like that one inside the pyramid. The problem was I needed a bit more of background for the story. Otherwise it would completely be a board game session. So I thought that instead of playing normal characters I could create the original cartoons series characters from the 80s. I made up some cool features and powers for some of them. Others were easy. I will post someday the characters sheets here, but I’d like to do some little adjustments before ;-)

To make it short, the plot was a last challenge for the characters where they would have the chance to go back to earth. Kind of the final non-released episode.

The game was a success. The players made their way home, but they had serious difficulties to make it possible so the level of the dungeon was really adjusted to the character’s abilities and weapons. Anyway, the most important thing was that we had tons of fun during the game and also a lot of practicing for our English.

The thing is that I thought it would have been really cool to have the miniatures representing the cartoons characters. We used some proxies from the D&D miniatures for the game, but when I got home I decided to give it a try just in case someone would have manufactured these miniatures and I just wasn’t aware (as already occurred to me a few years before with the Stargate miniatures).

Unfortunately I couldn’t find what I was looking for but I found something cooler. The following blog where this fellow was customizing miniatures using different brands, mainly heroclix:

He is customizing a lot of miniatures about G.I. Joe theme (in which I am also very interested). But he also made the D&D cartoon ones. This opens a new wonderful world in front of me.

I have decided to try this technique and create some miniatures for my future games. I haven’t modelled before aside from small fixing using green stuff, but I hope this helps me to improve my skills on it.

And now I’ll show you my first project: Bobby the Barbarian:

and finally... Voilà
